With electronic land registration a reality in most of Ontario, real estate fraud (also known as title fraud) has become a significant problem and is expected to grow in future years.
WHAT IS REAL ESTATE OR TITLE FRAUD?
Despite security safeguards in the electronic land registration system, it is possible for fraudsters to forge your signature and use fake identification to refinance your property and take the funds. It is even possible for fraudsters to transfer the title out of your name and then mortgage the property, all without your knowledge.
HOW CAN YOU BE PROTECTED?
When you purchase a home you should obtain title insurance. If you already own a home and did not obtain title insurance when you bought it, I can obtain title insurance for you now so that you too can be protected against title fraud.
