DIVORCE OPINION LETTER

If you were divorced outside Canada and
wish to get remarried in Ontario, when you apply for an Ontario marriage
licence you need to provide a legal opinion from an Ontario lawyer, addressed
to both applicants for the marriage licence, giving reasons why the divorce
should be recognized in the Province of Ontario. You will also need
the original or court-certified copy of the final decree, final judgment
or certificate of divorce. (If the decree is in a language
other than English or French, you will also need a translated copy together
with an affidavit sworn by the translator.) I will only be able to
provide such an opinion letter if one of the parties to the divorce resided
in the jurisdiction granting the divorce for at least one year immediately
preceding the application for divorce.
Before attending at my office to obtain an opinion
letter, you should obtain and complete and bring with you:

a Marriage Licence Application

a Statement of Sole Responsibility for each divorce signed
by both parties to the new marriage
You should also bring with you two pieces of personal
identification.
